  • 1. What does a production company do?A production company provides the physical basis for works in the realms of the performing arts, new media art, film, television, radio, and video. There are bigger production companies, which have more resources in terms of finance and influence, which tend to produce high-budget blockbuster movies, and smaller production companies, which usually produce independent movies with smaller demographics and low budgets. some examples of bigger production
  • 2. My production/distribution company I chose Columbia Pictures, a Sony Entertainment company, as a hypothetical production and distribution company for my film ‘Survival.’ Columbia Pictures produces a wide range of different genres, ranging from comedy to action to romance; some of their movies have been big budget blockbusters, such as The Amazing Spider-Man Series, 21 Jump Street and Casino Royale. However, they have also produced some more low-budget films such as Closer and 30 Minutes or Less.
  • 3. Why this company would produce & distribute my filmThe reason why I chose this company is because they have produced similar films such as Zombieland, which has a fairly small budget of $23.6 million. Although ‘Survival’ would not be a huge blockbuster, I did not think it would be classed as an independant film, and would have a similar budget. I was originally going to have Universal Pictures distribute my movie, but I then decided to use a slightly smaller company, since I wanted ‘Survival’ to be a less conventional take on the usual post-apocalyptic zombie movie. Large companies tend to avoid taking risks with films, so I decided that a company which frequently produced more alternative films would be more suited to distribute ‘Survival.’ In addition to this, the financing of the film would be fairly simple due to the small cast, simple locations and minimal amount of special effects. Due to the movie having a smaller budget, it would not be hugely advertised or promoted. The financing for the movie would come from the production company, as well as some sponsors.
