  • The goal of this presentation is to aid the servant in:
  • A. Knowing and developing different types of teaching.
  • B. Gathering his thoughts and knowing his objective without losing the audience.
  • Learning numerous methods of giving a sermon or teaching a lesson.
  • The Sermon on the Mount
  • Mathew 5 – 7
  • Study the sermon on the mount and notice the different ideas and methods that our Lord Jesus used to reach his audience.
  • A sermon is one of the most powerful methods in the Christian teaching, it’s main goal is to deliver the word of God to people effectively.
  • 15 methods
  • In this presentation, there are 15 different methods that you can use to develop your sermon.
  • Some of them are very basic, while others are new. I will also try to give some examples of each of the methods.
  • The Diamond Outline
  • Known as the sermon with different angles
  • It is the type of sermon that has one main idea, but is being clarified by more than one way. Each face of the diamond is being analyzed as a jeweler would until they are all examined and the diamond is complete.
  • Example: The book of Isaiah Chapter 96 For unto us a Child is born,       Unto us a Son is given;       And the government will be upon His shoulder.       And His name will be called       Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,       Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.       Of the increase of His government and peace       There will be no end,The Diamond OutlineExample: The book of Proverbs Chapter 6What does God hates?16 These six things the LORD hates,       Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:        17 A proud look,       A lying tongue,       Hands that shed innocent blood,        18 A heart that devises wicked plans,       Feet that are swift in running to evil,        19 A false witness who speaks lies,       And one who sows discord among brethren.The ladder outline
  • This type of sermon relies on a step by step approach.
  • Every idea is built on the previous one until you reach the Climax of the sermon’s goal.
  • An example: John 15:9-11 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
  • The true joy is obeying God, God’s will was known to us thru Christ, we must get to know Christ
  • The Contrast outline
  • Always falls between 2 sides.
  • Opposite ideas are presented. It is usually used to prove a point or correcting a point.
  • Examples: Differences between,
  • Gentleness vs. anger
  • Saints vs. Sinners
  • Peter vs. Judas
  • Mary vs. Martha or St. Mary vs. Eve
  • The rich man and Lazarus
  • The Devil vs. Angels

  • The Question and Answer Outline
  • The speaker can present one question and many answers. Or ask many questions and have one answer.
  • Use the why, when what, who, How….
  • Example:
  • Purity: What is it? Why is it beneficial? How is it possible? Who can reach that level?
  • The Chase Outline
  • Also known as the guessing game…
  • The speaker starts with a question, then gives various answers that are actually wrong.
  • He finally gives the correct answer
  • Examples
  • A. What is repentance?Is it feeling guilty? Is it feeling sad? Is it saying sorry?Actually it is changing your ways
  • What is fasting?
  • Changing food, a habit, being sad and depressed
  • Actually it is the changing of heart
  • The Diagnosis and Remedy Outline
  • It relies on diagnosing an issue and then finding the remedy, cure, or solution.
  • The sermon would be broken in 2 equal parts, one for the diagnosis and the other for the remedy.
  • This method is usually most fit for dealing with Christian life problems and the church

  • It used to answer the question of How.
  • For this method to work the speaker has to be very detailed in his description and did his due diligence in researching a solution.
  • Example:
  • Worrying, reasons for it and how to cure it?

  • Worrying is the sickness of this generation.
  • First: Describe the problem.
  • It causes sickness.
  • It has effects on the individual and the family.
  • It is a sign of weakness of faith
  • The Dialectic Outline The first idea or assumption is indeed accepted to the audience. Then the speaker presents it’s opposite which leads the listener to doubt. By building on the idea and it’s opposite the speaker hopes that the audience will accept it. The worth of this outline is the listener will understand and Believe. Thus the speaker will add to his understanding and believesThe Dialectic OutlineExample:
  • Do Not love the world…..
  • However, For God loved the world, that he sent his only Son…And the answer is that we must not Love the Lust of the world.The Dialectic OutlineExample:
  • Ask and you shall receive
  • However, God knows what we need before we ask.And the answer is that God wants us to reach out to Him.The Dialectic OutlineExample: The sinful woman to be stoned
  • Describe her embarrassments, her fear from the law and being stoned.
  • She had committed a sin and was brought in front of our Lord Jesus Christ to be judged.The Judge must judge fairly and condemn her.However, Our Lord set her free because he was able to carry her sins.There is always hope to repent as long as you repent in front of the True Judge.The Analogy OutlineIt is based on comparing using an illustration or a picture. It is a method that is easy to understand by the audience.Examples: Describing the Lord as the Good Shepherd.You give examples of a good Shepherd . He knows his sheep by name . The sheep recognizes his voice . He carries a staff to protect and guide. . He gives his life for sheep.The Analogy OutlineExamples: Our Lord Jesus to Stone

  • Our Lord Jesus is like a precious stone, you compare them in their worth, strength, steadfast, and perseverance. The Analogy OutlineExample: Comparing our Lord Jesus to the Stone cont-
  • Our Lord builds the believers and destroys , Just like a stone can build a house and destroys.
  • Daniel saw him as a stone that was not made by man and it turned into a great mountain.
  • Our Lord in the foundation where we can stand.
  • Thus Our Lord is the structure where we build our life who denies Him loses everything and who accepts Him lives forever.The Proof OutlineThis method always starts with the statement. This is True because….It is a method that the speaker concentrates on proofing and ensuring, thus he gives many examples and evidence to proof his point. The importance of this method is that it gives rational reasoning.Examples include “The Divinity of Christ”, or important Church Dogma’s.The Rebuttal OutlineThis method is opposite of the proof outline, since the speaker tries to erase the listener’s mind of a wrong concept, teaching, or idea. This method is very effective dealing with social topics such alcoholism, smoking, etc…It is a method that is more than just the feel of things, but you get to present reasoning and scientific steps.The Refrain Outline In this method there is an idea or a decision that is repeated. It is usually called the symphonic or musical sermon. The decision is given at the beginning and then is repeated after each idea that is mentioned.As an example “As Jesus Said to them”.The disciples went to get the colt and found it “as Jesus said to them”.And the crucifixion happened exactly “As Jesus said to them”.The Refrain OutlineAnd this method is accepted and enjoyed by many people as it easy to remember.One of it’s examples is a famous sermon by Pope Shenouda about “Those who no one remembers”. Which is printed in the spiritual service books.The series of Statement Outline The subject is delivered in numerous statements or points that talks about the same subject. It gives the audience the feel of the importance of the points. It usually accepted because it is given in an orderly manner.The series of Statement OutlineExample:Examine yourself. Know yourself.Accept yourself. Confront yourself.OrThe Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man, and everything he builds, God helped successed with His Hands.The Dogfight Outline It is similar to the rebuttal outline, however with more Force. In this method the speaker attacks the topic explosively as if he is holding someone with both hands and shaking him until the audience can realize his point. This method is used once in a while so the audience would not get bored hearing the same topic. It is people’s nature to leave everything to go watch a fight. This method should not be used too often.The Subversive Outline In this method the speaker seems that he is following and backing up a certain idea or teaching by giving examples and then suddenly he starts showing the excuses that people use not to follow the teaching. There is no doubt this style requires the speaker to have experience and intelligence so he would not obtain opposite results.Conclusion in preparing a lesson
  • Pray with humility, passion and perseverance.
  • Concentrate on a main topic or idea.
  • Decide which method/outline you want to use.
  • Put the goal of your lesson in detailed sentences

  • C. The audience should practice….
  • Conclusion in preparing a lesson5. Put your main goals into words on small index papers.6. Research by reading books, contemplation, etc..7. Pull out examples, miracles, verses from the Bible.8. Finally live what you Preach.
